Assembly fashion show of grade 5/6 team art work

Congratulations to all the grade 5/6 fashion teams on their amazing efforts over the past 2 months to create wearable art. You collaborated on your wonderful outfits and learnt to work to a deadline!

Your speeches and modelling at the assembly fashion show made us all proud.

A big thanks to IKEA for donating the lights and batteries for the outfits and the runway.

Grade 3/4’s in the Art room

This term the students in grade 3/4 have worked on developing their skills in using clay by making Manga faces (ie a cartoon version of themselves). They have also developed their ability to make connections between art and numeracy. eg 2 hemispheres = a sphere, manga cube- cube net and fractions of the manga face. Some of them have been fired in our kiln and the rest are drying sufficiently before I put them in. Students will paint these self portrait Manga faces.

Next up we are investigating symmetrical designs for a “tile” company based on their multicultural unit in the classroom. 3/4T are working on Indonesian designs. 3/4S – Polynesian/NZ, 3/4E Egyptian, 3/4C- Mexican, and 3/4 W -German. The students are using 1cm dot paper to assist their ability to do their rough draft of their design. They will trace over their design against the window onto cartridge paper and paint the final piece with water or poster paints. Fine details can be added with a fineliner.

Later in the term we will be investigating the art of author/illustrator Colin Thomson.

Science Grades 5/6

Light is all around us.

The students in Grades 5/6 have been exploring the different types of magnetic rays, including visible light.

We have passed light through glass to refract it and observe the many colours on the light spectrum.

Many of us are wondering why the moon looks lit up

Gr 1/2 Papier Mache and abstract painting in the art room

The students in grade 1/2 have been working through the process of papier mache. They are making their 3D landscape sculptures very secure by attaching containers with 3 layers of paper and PVA glue (watered down). To check them they turn them upside down and give them a little hit! If the containers are still wobbly it needs more layers.

Some students have begun to paint their work – using the colour wheel and their knowledge of colours to inspire them. eg. using various shades of one colour -‘monochrome’, opposite/complementary colours, primary colours, cool or warm colours and so on. They can choose how they want to paint it. They can also add patterns, shapes, lines. These process is helping them to understand how you can go from a realistic idea like the view out of your car window to finding the shapes to represent that view to painting it in a way that is inspired by colour theory. We have also talked about having a base coat and layers of paint to cover the newspaper. Students are using the language- foreground, mid ground and background as well.

We have a couple more weeks on this and then we will be working on art inspired by Anthony Browne’s Willy the Chimp books.

Foundation Art: Pamela Allen Clay sculptures

The students in Foundation have been learning how to make a boat inspired by Pamela Allen’s books ” Who Sank the Boat” and “I wish I had a Pirate Suit”. 1. They learnt to make a pinch pot hands go round and round with straight fingers to make a ball, then put your thumbs in the middle and pinch around and around. 2. To make the character that sits in the boat they learnt how to make a coil by moving hands back and forth with straight fingers. Some of the students also attached things using the score, slip, smooth technique. The students chose which book they wanted their clay boat and characters to be inspired by.

We now need to wait a few weeks for them to dry, be fired and then we can paint them!

We are doing some fruit and Veggie super hero posters while we wait.IMG_7934 IMG_7936 IMG_7937 IMG_7938 IMG_7940 IMG_7941 IMG_7942 IMG_7943 IMG_7945 IMG_7975 IMG_7976 IMG_7983 IMG_7984 IMG_7985 IMG_7988 IMG_7990 IMG_8009 IMG_8013 IMG_8022 IMG_8034 IMG_8062 IMG_8063 IMG_8064 IMG_8065 IMG_8066 IMG_8067 IMG_8068 IMG_8073 IMG_8074 IMG_8075 IMG_8120
